How does a Wi-Fi QR code work?

A Wi-Fi QR code holds the network name, the password and the security type, in a standard format recognized by the iPhone camera (iOS 11 and later) and recent Android phones. When scanned, the phone offers to join the network: one tap is enough.

Where should you display it?

Anywhere people ask for the password:

  • Restaurants and cafés: on tables or at the counter.
  • Hotels and rentals: in rooms and the welcome booklet.
  • Offices and coworking spaces: in the meeting room.
  • Trade shows and events: on the booth.

Security: good habits

Anyone who scans the code gets access to the network. So keep the QR code for a guest network, separate from your business network. If you change the password, create a new code: a Wi-Fi QR code is necessarily static, since the phone must read the password directly from it.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t a Wi-Fi QR code be dynamic?

To connect, the phone must read the network name and password from the symbol itself: no web page can do it instead. If the password changes, you need to generate a new code.

Are all phones compatible?

iPhones since iOS 11 and the vast majority of recent Android phones read Wi-Fi QR codes with the camera. On older models, a QR code reader app does the job.

Is the Wi-Fi QR code free?
